Whatever the season, North Conway and the White Mountains of New Hampshire have something for everyone.

Downtown North Conway is dotted with quirky shops selling everything from penny sweets to locally handcrafted things, and they’re just as much fun to browse around as they are to shop in.

There are also several wonderful restaurants, cafés, and ice cream stores to select from, and it is possible to spend an entire day just walking around the hamlet.

Lake Winnipesaukee

Tourists go to Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake, to swim in the deep, clear waters beneath the shadows of the White Mountains. If you stay at Church Landing, you won’t have any trouble getting a spot on the water, no matter how crowded the lake grows.

The resort is situated on a grassy hill on Meredith Bay’s beach, originally home to a small church but is now a full-service resort.

In addition to a private, sandy beach on the lake, a full-service spa, and a restaurant just feet from the water, Church Landing offers an indoor-outdoor pool.

The small village of Peterborough is an artists’ enclave with plenty of New England charm and one of New Hampshire’s most romantic getaways.

The town of Contoocook is set in the Monadnock Valley along the Contoocook River and has a population of a little over 6,000 people. It is one of New Hampshire’s oldest towns, founded in 1737.

If you’re in Peterborough between June and September, don’t miss a performance by the famed Peterborough Players, a renowned theater company putting on world-class shows since 1933.

The perfect afternoon date is a trip up Pack Monadnock in Miller State Park. The 1.3-mile paved road leads to stunning peak views in New Hampshire’s oldest state park.

The Ossipee Mountains surround the towns of Moultonborough and Center Harbor, which are located on the northern edge of Lake Winnipesaukee. You couldn’t ask for a more romantic location than this.

We recommend spending a whole day exploring Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area, which features 5,000 acres of breathtaking scenery, 30 miles of trails, and seven waterfalls (on the Shaw’s Brook Walk).

The Lucknow Residence, a stone and timber Arts and Crafts mansion erected in 1914 is the property’s focal point. The home is open every day from Memorial Day weekend to mid-October and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The meandering two-lane NH Route 112, which climbs over the spine of the White Mountains via New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Pass, is truly not a highway.

This magnificent route, which stretches 35 miles from Conway in the east to Lincoln in the west, offers access to various natural and artificial attractions and panoramic views.

The White Mountain National Forest, which protects 148,000 acres of wilderness, encompasses the entire area.

Make use of the scenic pull-outs, as some of the best views are not accessible from the road; this is especially true on the summit’s western side.

Hampton Beach

New Hampshire may have the shortest coastline of any state, yet it is home to one of the most popular family beach resorts in the Northeast.

Hampton Beach has been a popular vacation destination for years, and it’s “casino” – a community center point of beach resorts at the start of the twentieth century – still exists.

These were built for a ballroom, tearooms, and family entertainment, not for gambling. The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, which opened in 1899, is now a live music and comedy venue on the boardwalk that runs along the beach’s long stretch of white sand.

Concerts at Hampton Beach State Park’s Seashell Stage, movies on the beach, and fireworks are other attractions in this always-bustling town.

In the heart of this maritime and shipbuilding town’s historic center, Market Square has been a lively focus for the city from the days when New Hampshire’s Colonial Legislature met here.

Fall Foliage Drives

In September and early October, when the maples turn scarlet and orange and the birches turn a brilliant yellow, New Hampshire is at its most gorgeous. Almost every route, whether a winding, tree-lined cross country skiing drive or a freeway with sweeping mountain vistas, will provide sights.

Follow the Connecticut River up the west side of the granite state, where routes 12, 12A, and 10 give varied views over valley fields to Vermont’s highlands for a range of opinions.

Polar Caves

Glaciers that formerly blanketed the White Mountains in a mile-thick covering of ice scraped massive slabs of granite ledge off the hillside as they melted and slid southward, forming Polar Caves.

These rocks and granite slabs shattered at the base of a massive cliff, forming caves and passageways beneath and between them. Some crevices are so deep that ice forms and stays there all summer.

The Rock Garden, at the foot of the caves, is a network of routes among enormous rocks strewn across the forest floor that are simpler to climb than the caves’ steeper trails.

Lost River Gorge

Glaciers covered the White Mountains with a mile-high ice sheet during the previous Ice Age.

When these melted and receded, meltwater and moving ice created deep pits in the granite and tore massive loose boulders, scattering them across the terrain helter-skelter. This natural wonder was the result of a confluence of these factors.

As it dips through the steep valley, Lost River retreats into tunnels made by a tumble of glacial rocks, then reappears in cascades and long waterfalls, swirling in gigantic cauldron-shaped potholes.
